Solo Manaslu Circuit Trek is now possible

Hello travelers from across the globe, I am here to share an exciting news to you all! Since 2026, Nepal Government has introduced a new rule regarding trekking activities inside the restricted areas of Nepal. Now, it is possible to trek solo.

Restricted areas of Nepal are sensitive places especially in the northern border with Tibet (autonomous region of People’s Republic of China). The reasons behind keeping these areas as restricted are due to geo - political issues and cultural sensitivity. For years, Nepal Army fought against Khampa Rebels (factions of Tibetan Dalai Lama evicted by Chinese Government from Tibet). Even after the conflicts settlement, some areas are kept within the restricted region due to cultural significance. Furthermore, it is also to preserve the unique traditional and natural resources of these places. Some of the restricted regions of Nepal are Upper Mustang, Manaslu, Upper Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Darchula, Nar Phu Valley, etc.

What’s so exciting about new rule of restricted treks in Nepal?

Before 2026, solo trekking was not possible. Special restricted area permit was issued to a group of at least two trekkers but it is not the case now. Nepal Government has lifted ban on solo trekking in all restricted areas of Nepal. Lots of trekking companies and associated groups had urged government to lift this rule to increase number of visitors. Finally, the government has listened to the pleas of these tourism entrepreneurs.

Solo Trekking in Restricted region is allowed but with trekking guide

Even if solo trekking is allowed, you are not permitted to do unguided trek in any restricted areas. One must hire a trekking guide from Nepal government registered trekking company. The reason behind this is due to geographical terrain, wilderness areas, and unique cultural backgrounds of the region.

If you are planning to do the famous Manaslu Circuit Trek or Manaslu Base Camp Trek in Nepal, then it is possible to trek solo now. Hire a trekking guide and explore the mystical home of the world’s 8th tallest mountain, Mt. Manaslu (8163 m).

Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit Fee is $50 per day

Besides the solo trekking unban, Nepal Government has changed the permit fee of the Upper Mustang Trek in Nepal. Trekkers had to pay 500 $ for special permit before which was bothersome and prevented many from traveling to the place. However, it is now changed to 50 $ per day. You can plan the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, Motorbike Tour, Trek, and any activities without hassles of permit fee. Pay according to your stay inside the region.

Please make sure that you have all permits and documents before trekking in Nepal. Getting permits is not only to follow the government rule but also for safety. These permits are used to track the whereabouts of trekkers. Therefore, it is not wise to skip obtaining the permit.
