Essential Information

Before embarking on this journey, you should know the following information about the Annapurna Circuit trek.

Annapurna Circuit Trek difficulty

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is the best and most rewarding long-distance trek in Nepal. ACT is a moderate-level trek that can be joined and enjoyed by anyone who can walk for 6-7 hours daily.

The Annapurna Circuit trek leads you through different climatic zones, diverse terrains, rural farmland, subtropical forests, and glacial zones. The trails are well managed for trekkers but the problem is you will gradually ascend to higher altitude which is a bit tough. The more you gain high altitude, the lower the oxygen level will be which causes altitude sickness.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness happens when we ascend too quickly in the high altitudes and doesn’t give the body enough time to adjust to low oxygen. Those who do not follow the safety measures can suffer from altitude sickness during the trek.

Symptoms: The symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, breathing problems, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, etc.

Preventive measures: Keep your body hydrated, ascend gradually, drink enough water and fluids, and acclimatize well. Avoid the consumption of caffeine, alcoholic items, energy drinks, and smoke during the trek. These products will dehydrate you which causes altitude sickness.

Travel Insurance for the Annapurna Circuit Trek

When planning for the Annapurna Circuit Trek, travel insurance is necessary to cover the risk associated with high-altitude trekking. However, the Annapurna Circuit Trek travel is not mandatory for any trekkers, we strongly recommend you bring travel insurance with you. The insurance policy must include an emergency helicopter evacuation, medical expenses, accidental damage, and theft.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Permits

Trekking in the Annapurna region is the most splendid and ideal trekking route in the world. To explore the beautiful and classic Annapurna Circuit, you will need the following permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS card).

You can obtain those required permits and TIMS cards in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Note: Any trekker under the age of 10 does not require any of these permits.

The Best Time for Annapurna Circuit Trek

The trek to the Annapurna Circuit is open all year round with trekkers being allowed to explore the beauty of the Annapurna region. However, Spring and Autumn are the best rewarding seasons to trek the Annapurna Circuit. Summer/monsoon and winter are also there but it is the off-season for trekking in the mountains. If you can handle the harsh weather conditions, you can trek in these seasons also.

Spring season (March to May)

The Spring season is the pre-monsoon time which makes it the best trekking season in Nepal. At this time the temperature becomes mild and the lush valleys in Annapurna Conservation Area are embellished with vibrant colors of red, white, and pink rhododendrons and the wildflowers carpet the hills and trails making it mesmerizing. The time presents clear skies, and a perfect view of the towering peaks like Mt. Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range, which makes the Annapurna Circuit a must-to-do trek.

Autumn Season (September to November)

The Autumn season falls during the month of September to November which is another best time to visit Nepal given the comfortable temperature and the festive atmosphere. During this season of exceptional beauty, The Annapurna Circuit experiences spectacular panoramas and crystal-clear blue skies. This is the time when monsoon rain has just settled, which makes the environment clear, and air fresh allowing the trekkers to witness the most stunning glimpse of the snow-capped mountain ranges.

Summer/monsoon season (June to August)

This is the off-season for trekking because of heavy rainfall, high humidity, and scorching heat. The trail condition is not good, there is a risk of mudslides and flooding which makes the trek risky. However, the natural vegetation, foliage, rivers, streams, and waterfalls are in the most amazing condition. If you can handle the weather and don't mind the muddy trails, you can think about a trek to Annapurna Circuit trek.

Winter season (December to February)

The months of December to February mark the winter season, which is the challenging but rewarding experience on the Annapurna Circuit trek. At this time of the year, the Annapurna Circuit changes into a winter wonderland, favoring a heavenly atmosphere. One of the greatest experiences that you can have in the winter season is walking through the gleaming landscapes of mountains covered with white snow and unspoiled beauty by the crowds. You will be rewarded with the sparkling beauty of the mountains.

Accommodation & food During the Annapurna Circuit Trekking

Tea houses and lodges along the circuit are available for meals and accommodation with villages typically no more than 1 to 3 hours apart allowing for a fairly flexible itinerary. The lodges are very welcoming and appreciative of the business. Accommodations are rustic but more than sufficient after a long day on the trail. You will find a single room with an attached bathroom in some parts, and in some parts, you will have to share the room and bathroom.

The Annapurna Circuit trail is unreachable by road and the food has to be carried by porters and horses, so you might not get everything you want. But the teahouses and lodges have a large option of food that will be sufficient to give your body enough energy. You will find both Nepalese and Western cuisine. Our Annapurna Circuit Trek package includes only breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
