Essential Information

The name Everest is enough to impress the souls of the travelers around the globe. Almost every person around the world knows about Everest but when it comes to trekking to the Everest Base Camp, here are few things you should know about the Everest Base Camp trek!

Everest Base Camp Trek difficulty level

There is a beautiful saying, “Challenging routes always lead to beautiful destinations.” Everest Base Camp Trek perfectly fits in this. The EBC Trek is strenuously difficult. The trek is not as difficult as people imagine, but the trail leads you on a long walk at high altitude which can be a bit challenging for those who are not used to walking long hours. Beginners can do this trek with a good fitness level.

Our Everest Base Camp Trek 14 days package includes approximately 5-7 hour walks per day. The Everest Base Camp Trek distance covers around 130 kilometers for up and down. The EBC trail is developed and not so challenging but  the high altitude makes the trek difficult. If you do well preparations before the trekking, then you can accomplish this trek without any risk.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness happens when we travel at high altitude and if your body is not well acclimatized. Not every trekker suffers from altitude sickness, those who do not follow safety measures and hurry can suffer from it.

Symptoms of altitude sickness: Headache, Nausea, Vomiting, Loss of appetite, Breathing problem, Dizziness etc.

Preventive Measures for altitude sickness: Take proper acclimatization. Maintain your pace and carry a positive mindset. Drink plenty of water and contain fluids like soup to stay hydrated throughout the trek. Avoid energy drinks, junk food, caffeine, alcohol and smoke that can dehydrate your body.

Travel Insurance for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Travel insurance is not mandatory to join the Everest Base Camp trek. Though we highly suggest you take travel insurance, it covers the emergency Heli rescue and medical bills. You will require the insurance documents before the trek starts.

Everest Base Camp Trek Permits

Nepal Government charges permit entrance fee for all the national parks to protect the natural beauty including the Himalayas. For Everest Region Trek, you will need two permit cards, that is:

  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entrance card (Trekkers Card).
  • Sagarmatha National Park entry permit.

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entrance fee costs NRP 3000 per person which you can get from Lukla or Monjo at Sagarmatha National Park Counter. And Sagarmatha National Park permit costs NRP 3000 per  person, this permit can be acquired also from Lukla or Monjo.

The Best Time for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Spring and Autumn are the best seasons for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Summer/monsoon and winter are the off-season but if you can handle the hurdle of the weather you can do EBC trek in off-season also.

Spring Season March to May

Spring is one of the best seasons to trek Everest Base Camp. This is the mild time, succeeding winter and preceding summer where the spring flowers begin to bloom. This is the season of natural vegetation, beautiful flowers and clear weather. The Everest Base Camp Trek route blooms with seasonal flowers and is in perfect condition. You can enjoy the stunning natural vegetation and clear view of panoramic mountain vistas during this season.

Autumn September to November

This season is the second best time of the year as it is the post monsoon time. Everest region has pleasant and mild weather in this season. You will get to enjoy the lush pasture, green sceneries and blue sky adding extra to the beauty of snow capped mountains.

Summer/Monsoon season

This season is not considered a good time to trek because of high humidity, heavy rainfall and scorching heat. Due to heavy rains there is a risk of mudslides and landslides and the road condition is not good which makes the trek a bit risky. Though, the waterfalls, streams, rivers, natural vegetation and foliage are in their most pleasing condition. If you are within biodiversity and dont have problems with muddy steepy trails, you can consider trekking to Everest Base Camp at this time also.

Winter season December to February

This is another off-season for trekking in the high himalayas. The weather is foggy and the trails are covered with snow. The temperature decreases horribly and the day time also gets short. Extreme low temperatures at the mountains makes the trek difficult, but the empty route, frozen vegetation, glaciers, icefall and breathtaking mountain panoramas make it look like heaven. You must experience Everest Base Camp hiking in the winter season.

Accommodation and Meals during EBC Trek

Trekkers get several options for accommodation and food. There are enough tea houses on the trekking route of the base camp. In the lower part, you will find a single room with a fine bed, an attached bathroom and basic facilities. But in the higher parts, you will get a dual sharing room with a normal bed and separate bathroom. You will get boiled water, WiFi, charging and hot showers at the lodge/ hotels but need to pay extra money.

However, the Everest Base Camp Trek is a high altitude trek, you will get different varieties of food. You will find both Nepali and Western cuisine on the menu. Nepalese food Dal Bhat Tarkari (lentils, rice, vegetables) is rich in carbohydrates that gives your body enough energy. You will also get Pizza, Pasta, dumplings, fried potatoes, Bread, omelet, boiled eggs, soup, Sherpa stew, both veg and nonveg items. Meat items are not fresh in the higher altitudes so it's better to avoid meat items. Our package covers 3 meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We highly recommend you to have nutritious food and more fluids like Soup, water, hot water, ginger lemon tea, hot lemon, lentils, vegetable soup etc. Please avoid dairy products, alcohol, smoke and caffeinated items.

Note: You will find tea shops throughout the trail where you can get mineral water, boiled water, snacks, nuts and bars for an extra charge.
