How to Prepare for Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Proper preparation leads to a safe and successful goal achievement. The ABC trek is not so demanding, so you don't need any hard training and prior experience. You can do simple cardio activities like running, swimming, cycling, jumping, trying to play outdoor games, drinking enough water, and having nutritious food.

You will have to walk up and down for 5-7 hours daily on rocky trails, so start training and build walking habits just a few weeks before the actual trek. Boost your stamina and endurance. Max Altitude: 1400 m./4592 ft. Accommodation: 3 star hotel

After having a delicious breakfast we will leave the hotel for Kathmandu Heritage Valley cultural sightseeing, including Swoyambhunath stupa (monkey temple), Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple. Those places help you to learn about ancient Nepal, art, life, and culture.

In the morning, we will board a tourist bus to Pokhara. On the way, you can see some beautiful landscapes, hills, rivers, and local markets. Kathmandu to Pokhara takes about 7-8 hours drive. having a rest after reaching to Pokhara we will walk around the beautiful lake side.

Early in the morning, we will take a drive to Nayapul enjoying some amazing terraced fields, beautiful valleys and other sceneraries. After we reach Nayapul, we will start our hike to Ulleri through rivers, Gurung villages, and cultivating lands.

On this day, we will wake up early, have breakfast, and start our journey toward Ghorepani. You will traverse through the cool lush and stunning rhododendron forest, Magar community. Passing the ups and down trails, we reach Ghorepani and spend the night there.

We will wake up very early in the morning, leave our backpacks in the hotel, and hike up to Poon Hill to catch the sunrise view. From Poon Hill, you see the first glimpse of the sun rising over the Annapurna ranges, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Nilgiri present mesmerizing looks. Poon Hill is the famous viewpoint and the perfect palace for photography to capture the golden moments with spectacular mountain views.

After enjoying the mountain sunrise view, we will get back to the hotel, have breakfast and trek towards Tadapani. We will mostly walk into the jungle, the trail has many ups and downs but it's good enough for trekking. The night we will spend in Tadapani.

After having breakfast in the morning, we will trek to Tadapani crossing Chhomrong on the way. The trail takes you through some gorgeous mountain views, rhododendron forests, Gurung, and magar villages. On the way, we will pass through Ghandruk village, Kimron Khola, and Chomrong and reach Tadapani. We will stay here for the night.

Our destination of the day is Deurali. After having a delicious breakfast, we will start our trek. The trail leads us through beautiful waterfalls, forests, and deep narrow valleys, and we get a closer look at Mt. Fishtail.

We will wake up early in the morning and hike to reach the Annapurna Base Camp. We will ascend on a rocky trail enjoying the amazing himalayan beauties on the way. We first reach Machhapuchhre Base Camp, from where we get to enjoy some stunning mountain vistas. Then we move forward, and after some hours we will reach our final destination, the Annapurna Base Camp. From the base camp, you will get the most mesmerizing views of Annapurna massifs, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchree, and the surrounding peaks. We will soak ourselves in the beauty of the base camp and spend the night at base camp and enjoying our achievement.

After having a delicious breakfast at the base camp, we will trek back to Bamboo. Collecting all the memories we leave the base camp. Following the Modi Khola and rhododendron forest, we reach Bamboo.

Today, we will trek to Samrung via Jhinu Danda, and this will be our last trekking day. Passing some villages, rivers, and forests, we will reach Samrung and take a Jeep to Pokhara.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek difficulty level

Annapurna Base Camp Trek is moderately difficult. The trails are not challenging but the long walk and high altitude make the trek a bit challenging, mainly for those who do not have a habit of walking for long hours. No prior experience is necessary, every beginner can join the ABC trek. 

Our Annapurna Base Camp Trek 11-day package includes an average walk of 4-6 hours/day. The Annapurna Base Camp trek distance covers 115 kilometers. There are a number of lodges and tea houses with better facilities throughout the route. Annapurna Base Camp is one of the easiest treks.

Altitude sickness

Altitude sickness occurs when we travel at high altitudes and our body does not get proper rest. Trekkers who ignore the safety measures, and do hurry can easily suffer from altitude sickness. 

Symptoms: These are the symptoms of altitude sickness; Breathing problems, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, etc.

Safety measures: During the trek, keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water and having fluids like soup. Avoid consuming alcoholic products, dairy items, energy drinks, and smoke which makes your body dehydrate and causes altitude sickness. 

Travel insurance for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

When it comes to doing the Annapurna Base Camp trek, in your mind think about travel insurance. It is not compulsory but, we highly recommend to bring it. Travel insurance helps to cover the risk-related things to high altitude treks. Travel insurance helps cover the charges of emergency helicopter rescue, medical bills, theft, and any kind of accidental damage.

The Best Time to Do Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The ideal season for Annapurna Base Camp Trekking is the Spring and Autumn. Winter and Summer/monsoon are the off-season for trekking. But if you can handle the challenges of the weather then you can do ABC trek also in the off-season.

Spring Season (March to May)

Spring is the season of clear weather, comfortable temperatures, and blooming flowers. This period reveals the glory of the Himalayas with clear blue skies and blooming rhododendrons. It is the time of the year when the weather in the Annapurna Region is most pleasing, with minimal rainfall and offers mild temperature, that ensures an undisturbed view of the majestic mountains.

Autumn Season (September to November)

The Autumn season comes after the monsoon. The vegetation becomes lush, green, and more attractive. The temperature is gentle with clear and steady weather, making it the best season for trekking and enjoying the pure and vivid appearance of the Himalayas, as well as the local culture and customs. 

Summer /monsoon season: (June to August)

During this time, the Annapurna Base Camp route is clear with a pleasantly warm environment. Although this season comes with some unique challenges like muddy and slippery trails, leeches, risk of floods, and landslides which makes it a bit hard to trek. The greenery and gleaming raindrops add extra beauty to the landscapes, and the air after the rain feels rejuvenating and fresh. 

Winter season (December to February)

Accommodation and Meals during ABC Trek

During the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking, you will find lodges, tea houses and guesthouses for accommodation. In the mountains, simple lodges are standard and have clean & comfortable rooms. The rooms are simple and comfortable with two or three beds, little furniture, and no AC & heaters available. A few accommodations provide an attached bathroom, most others have a shared bath and restroom. And some Places have a fire heater.

The Annapurna Base Camp route is fully inhabited with villages and teahouses/lodges. Eating options are more in this trek, compared to others. As per our Annapurna Base Camp Trek package, you will get breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As there are many food options, you can have anything you want by paying extra. Throughout the trek, you will get boiled water in tea houses and lodges.

Please remember that our trekking package includes only a simple room cost and breakfast, lunch & dinner. Except that, for all your personal expenses and services like hot shower, charging, and WiFi, you need to pay yourself.
