Essential Information

Here is all the additional information regarding the Three Passes Trek difficulty, permits, travel insurance, best season and accommodation, and foods that you should know before embarking on this journey:

Three High Passes Trek Difficulty level

Three Passes Trek is the most demanding and challenging trek in the Everest Region. If you love and enjoy the adventure, this trek is absolutely for you. The Three Passes trekking package is 18 days long which demands high endurance level, stamina, and physical strength to complete.

The hiking takes 4-8 hours of walking daily that depends on the destination of the day. The trekking route involves forests, steep ascent and descents, glacial paths, and rocky trails that makes the trek difficult. However, this trek allows you to explore the most amazing and breathtaking mountain ranges and rewards you with incredible experiences.

Altitude Sickness

When we travel in high altitudes and our body doesn't get sufficient time to adjust to the low oxygen level, altitude sickness occurs. In high altitudes, there is a chance every trekker suffers from altitude sickness but you can prevent it by following the preventive measures and guidance of the guides/company.

Symptoms of altitude sickness: Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, insomnia, and appetite loss are some of the symptoms that are noticeable if you are suffering from altitude sickness.

Preventive measures: Stay hydrated, acclimatize properly, drink enough water and fluids, maintain your pace, and carry a positive mindset. Avoid consuming energy drinks, dairy products, alcoholic items, smoking, caffeine, etc, and follow the suggestions given by the guides.

Travel Insurance for Three Passes Trek

When planning for the Three Passes Trek, travel insurance is the most important thing that trekkers should not forget. However, the travel insurance is not mandatory for any trekkers, but we strongly recommend bringing it. The insurance helps to cover the risk associated with high altitude trekking. You must consider that your insurance policy covers the facilities including emergency helicopter evacuation, health bills, theft, accidental damage, and trip cancellation due to any uncertain events. Trekkers must provide a copy of their travel insurance policy to Adventure Hikers Pvt. Ltd. before the trek starts.

Everest Three Passes Trek Permits

The Government of Nepal has implied permits for the trekkers to enter the Everest region to protect the beauty of the region and for the safety of the trekkers. The following two permits are required to do the Three Passes trek.

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit.
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit.

Both Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permits can be obtained from Lukla and both of the permits cost NPR 3000 per person.

The Best Time for Everest Three High Passes Trek

The Spring and Autumn are the best seasons for the Everest Three Passes trekking. The summer is the monsoon season in Nepal and the winter is too cold for trekking in the Himalayas. The summer and winter seasons are considered as off-season for trekking.

Spring season (March to May)

Spring is known as the season of flowers, and perfect weather with mild temperatures. The season presents the most stunning views of the Himalayan ranges, glaciers, icefalls, and glacial lakes.

Autumn season (September to November)

Autumn is the best time of the year for trekking in Nepal. As it is the post monsoon season, the skies are clear and the climates are favorable. The green sceneries, lush pastures, comfortable temperature, and the clear sky showcase additional charm to the spectacular mountains.

Summer/Monsoon season (June-August)

This season is associated with heavy rainfall. The temperature gets extremely hot with high humidity and the trekking trails get slippery and muddy, and most of the parts are affected by flood and landslides at this time. However, nature and its beauty are at their peak, offering clear views with greenery, clouds over the hills, cascading waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. This is also a less crowded trekking season in Nepal.

Winter season (December to February)

This is the off-season for trekking and the snow falls starts in the Himalayas. The daytime gets short, and the night temperature drastically falls down. The trekking trails are covered with snow and the freezing temperature makes the trek difficult. But the empty trails, winter snowland, jaw-dropping panoramas, and frozen vegetation presents the heavenly atmosphere and heart stopping views.

Accommodation and Meals during the Three Passes Trek

The Everest Three Passes Trek features accommodations in teahouses. The tea house accommodation provides basic but comfortable facilities with a twin sharing room and separate bathroom. You may find a single room with an attached bathroom but it is hard to find one in trekking seasons. You will get boiled water, charging, a hot shower, and WiFi at the tea houses for extra money.

Being a high altitude trek, the Everest region trek offers a variety of foods. You will see both Nepali and Western cuisine in the tea houses menu. You are highly suggested to have only nutritious food. You must try Nepalese Dal Bhat Tarkari (lentils, vegetables, and rice) which is rich in carbohydrates and provides necessary energy to your body. You can have foods like pasta, dumplings, pizza, omelet, bread, etc. Avoid junk foods, dairy products, and meat items except eggs in the high altitudes. Our package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
