Essential Information

To Complete this trekking without any problem, you have to know some of the following things about the Upper Mustang Trek.

Upper Mustang Trek Difficulty Level

Upper Mustang Trek difficulty is considered as an easy to moderate level. The Upper Mustang region lies below 4,000m, so it is less difficult than other high altitude trekkings, featuring an easyly accessible and enjoyable journey. The trek to Upper Mustang is challenging, even though it is at moderate elevation.

The Hike to Mustang demands a minimum of 4-7 hours of walking each day through uneven paths. The only challenge of the trek is altitude sickness, the oxygen level decreases as you gain altitude. If anyone feels difficult and cannot walk, there is a facility for jeep, and horse riding, as the path is wide and spacious for vehicles to drive. With little effort and dedication, you can complete this journey.

Altitude Sickness

When your body doesn't get time to adjust to less oxygen availability at higher altitudes, altitude sickness occurs. This happens to the trekkers who move too quickly to a higher altitude without maintaining their own pace. Not everyone suffers from altitude sickness.

Symptoms: Headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, sleeping trouble, breathing problems, etc.

Preventive measures: Have proper acclimatization, maintain your pace, stay hydrated throughout the trek, drink enough water, and take fluids. Avoid consuming caffeine, energy drinks, alcoholic items, smoking, and dairy products which make your body dehydrate and cause altitude sickness.

Travel Insurance for the Upper Mustang Trek

Travel insurance for the Upper Mustang trek is not mandatory. As you are traveling in the high altitude area, we highly suggest you take travel insurance because it covers the emergency Heli rescue and medical bills. You should have the insurance documents before starting the trek.

Spring is the best time to visit Upper Mustang. Blooming flowers, green fields, and snow-capped mountains in the desert terrains present a picturesquely perfect scenery. At this time of the year, the temperature varies from mild to cold and the weather is also favorable, so this is the perfect time to trek in Nepal.

Autumn season (September- November)

Autumn is also a perfect time for Upper Mustang trekking, perfect weather with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The season provides great views of spectacular mountains and afternoons are too windy.

Winter season (December to February)

It is the extremely coldest time of the year. The locals start to sift into other places during this time, only a few people stay in the valley with proper preparation of fire and food to look after the village and animals. The entire valley is covered with snow and the temperature can fall to -25 degrees.

In conclusion, the best time to do the Upper Mustang trek is the Spring and Autumn season, as the weather is dry and warm presenting the clear mountain peaks and beautiful landscapes. If you want a free trail and avoid crowds then the summer and winter season is also good. The winter season can be challenging due to the heavy snowfall and low temperatures, while summer is also challenging with monsoon rain and slippery trails but the scenery looks absolutely amazing.
