Today, after having breakfast, we will take a tourist bus to Pokhara. During the journey, you will see many picturesque views. The beautiful city Pokhara is much more peaceful than Kathmandu offering the spectacular views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna, Lamjung Himal, and Dhaulagiri serving as the perfect starting point for your journey.

Our journey starts with a scenic drive to Nayapul enjoying the amazing views of Mount Fishtail, Annapurna South, Annapurna iv, and more mountains. After 1 hour of driving, we will reach Nayapul, and our amazing hike to Ulleri begins. You will hike through quaint villages, many welcoming tea houses and lodges offering delicious foods and tea. After you reach Ulleri, you will spend the night there.

After having a delightful breakfast, we will head up to Ghorepani. The hike from Ulleri follows a trail full of charming rhododendron forests. We will wake up early in the morning around 4 am and hike to Poon Hill. It takes us one hour to reach the top of Ponn Hill. As the darkness goes away, witness the stunning golden sunrise coming behind the Annapurna range slowly. After spending time for a while, we will come back to Ghorepani and have breakfast. Then after a while, we will trek towards Ghandruk. After 4-6 hours of walking we will enter the charming Ghandruk village.

Difficulty of Poon Hill Trek

Poon Hill is an easy trek in comparison to other popular treks in Nepal. The trek is short without any tough challenges on the trail and can be completed in 3-6 days. The trail is easy for experienced trekkers and local people but for beginners it can be a bit challenging. The trek has an uphill and steep stairs. So, walking uphill continuously for hours can be a bit difficult for trekkers. Though the Poon Hill altitude is 3,210 meters, altitude sickness is never a problem.

Altitude Sickness

Trek to Poon Hill is completely safe from altitude sickness. Any age of people can safely do this trek. As the trek takes to high altitude, some people can have sudden changes in the atmosphere and decreasing oxygen level. So, it is better to walk slowly with gradual pace.

Symptoms: Severe headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, blurry vision, insomnia etc.

Preventive measure: Stay hydrated, drink enough water, follow your guide’s suggestion, avoid alcoholic and smoking products, energy drinks.

Travel Insurance for Ghorepani Poon Hill trek

Though  the final trekking altitude is 3,210 meters and the Poon Hill trek is less risky, we strongly suggest taking travel insurance. Hiking in the lush forests, hills and mountainous areas is not a normal thing. You may face accidents and emergency situations. Ensure to include medical bills, helicopter evacuation and all kinds of trekking related facilities in your insurance plan.

Permits for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

As the Ghorepani Poon Hill comes in the Annapurna region, you will two kind of permit to enter the region, and they are:

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit.

The ACAP cost NRP 3000 per person.  The permits can be obtained from Kathmandu or Pokhara. We will take the permits on your behalf.

Best Time to Trek to Poon Hill

Usually, the Spring and Autumn season are the ideal time for Poon Hill trekking and all other trekkings in Nepal. The weather becomes clear and favourable in these seasons. 

Spring Season (March to May)

The spring season is a little warmer but more favourable for hiking, trekking, climbing peaks and any kind of adventurous activities in Nepal. During this time, you will walk through a dense forest of stunning rhododendron flowers in full bloom. The trekking trails are covered with spring flowers adding beautiful colors to the scenery. The clear weather offers spectacular views of Annapurna Range, Mt. Dhaulagiri and more peaks.

Autumn Season ( September to November)

The Autumn season offers breathtaking scenery with clear weather and more greenery. The weather is stable with clear sky and moderate temperature. The trekking trails are decorated with autumn colors and offer perfect visibility and stunning mountain views.

Summer Season (June to August)

Summer comes with rainfall and it is the off-season for trekking in Nepal. During Summer, The Poon Hill route is clear with a warm environment. Everywhere is greenery and offers breathtaking views of natural beauty and landscapes. But, it is also monsoon time in Nepal, so the trail gets muddy and slippery due to heavy rainfall. Most of the part of Nepal is affected with rain, flood and landslides during this time.

Winter Season (December to February)

The weather becomes colder and unclear in the winter season. The temperature is around 10 degree Celsius during the day and falls to 2 degree Celsius at night. Despite the cold, the trails are appropriate for trekking and the mountain views look more elegant and jaw-dropping. The frozen vegetation and snow covered trail makes the trekking experience more wonderful.

Accommodation and Meals during the Trek

The Poon Hill trail has enough tea houses, and lodges. You will mostly stay in a small lodge with basic facilities. You will find a cozy room and bed with a blanket and pillow. During peak seasons, most of the lodges, and teahouses are booked, you are lucky if you get a room without pre-booking in the peak seasons. Also, you will not find an attached bathroom and you need to pay extra money for facilities like WiFi, hot water bath and other stuff.

For food and drinking water, you will get the food according to the menu. You can find both Nepali and western cuisine on the menu. Especially Nepali traditional Dhal Bhat, Dhindo with veg/non-veg curry, Thukpa (noodle soup with seasonal veggies), Momo, Tibetan bread, Spaghetti, Potato fry, etc. You can ask for hot water, tea, coffee or any hot drinks whenever you want but have to pay extra money as it is not included in our package.

Yes, you will need permits to trek to Poon Hill as it comes within the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. You must obtain an ACAP permit to do this trek.

 

You will reach at the maximum altitude of 3,210 meters during the Poon Hill trek.

Poon Hill trekking trail is moderate in terms of difficulty. You will have to walk uphill and downhill stairs which can be a little hard. But overall it is an easy trek compared to other treks in Nepal. 

 

Mt. DHaulagiri, Himchuli, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Barahsikhar, Fishtail, Gurja Himal, and many more can be witnessed from the Poon Hill top.

As the Poon Hill is at 3,210 meters high, Mobile network is accessible. Every guest house during thsi hiking provide the WiFi, but somewhere you need to pay money and sometimes you can face network problems due to the weather condition.
